The Land Development Code

                Land Use and Zoning in the Louisville Metro is governed by the Land Development Code (“LDC”). The LDC covers multiple cities within Jefferson County; however, some individual cities are governed by their own zoning authority, and as such can have local versions of the LDC that are city specific. For the Louisville Metro, the LDC governs zoning, building and land design, landscaping, and other matters regarding land use that every homeowner in the Metro may need to be aware of from time to time depending on what they would like to do with the property they own.  The Metro LDC currently has eleven chapters, under which properties owners can find guidelines and city codes regarding their zoning districts and what is allowed in each district, which is important for owners who may wish to eventually rent their properties either as a long-term or short-term rental. Other important sections for property owners in the Metro cover such topics like parking and landscaping. The LDC is publicly available on the Louisville Kentucky government website under the Planning and Design Tab (https://louisvilleky.gov/government/planning-design/land-development-code), and is a dense legal document subject to amendment which is currently undergoing reform since 2020.
